Péter Elek graduated from Eötvös Loránd University (MSc in Mathematics) and Corvinus University of Budapest MA in Economics), and obtained his PhD in Statistics from ELTE with a thesis on extreme value modelling of time series. He was Head of the Division of Economic Research at the Hungarian Ministry of Finance and later Senior Economist at the Office of the Fiscal Council.
Currently his research interests include micro-econometrics, health economics, labour economics and program evaluation. He has been involved in the impact assessment of various health and labour market projects in Hungary, and has taught specialized impact assessment courses for government officials. He teaches courses in econometrics at ELTE, and has taught mathematical statistics at the Central European University (CEU).
